Pour It Out

“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” (Psalm 62:8)

Have you ever known anyone who lives in difficult circumstances or in constant pain and suffering, yet always demonstrates a contented, joyful attitude? They seem to be taking it all in stride, and you never hear them complain about their situation or talk about their problems.

Then there are others who have good health and everything they could possibly want or need – but complain about even the most trivial things. They may even both know Christ as their personal savior, yet their words reflect very different hearts.

You have probably asked yourself WHY? How can the one who should complain be so grateful and the one with everything to be thankful for be so focused on the negative? I believe Psalm 62:8 holds part of the answer.

We are reminded that our refuge can only be found in God, and that He is completely trustworthy – and we are given very specific instructions about what to do with our complaints, our woes, our heartaches, and our misery: pour them out to God. Yes, “venting” is a biblical principal – as long as we vent to the Lord. He has loved me from eternity past, he knit me together in my mother’s womb, he numbered all of my days, he bought me with the blood of Jesus Christ, he is omniscient and all-powerful, he is the only one who can truly understand and take care of me.... and he wants – no, insists – that I pour my heart out to HIM!

Amazingly, the result of obeying this command is life changing. As I empty my heart out to him, he fills it with his peace. Verse 5 says, “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.”

So, are you worried about what might happen tomorrow or next week or next year? Tell God all about it. Are you concerned about your children and their many adjustments? Tell God all about it. Do you feel ignored? Disappointed? Unloved? Unwanted? Tell God all about it. Has someone been unkind or hurtful? Tell God all about it. Are you tired? Lonely? Sad? Afraid? Tell God all about it.

Pour it ALL out – to HIM! “One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, and that you, O Lord, are loving.” Psalm 62:11

Prayer: Father, too often I demonstrate my lack of faith in you by taking my worries and complaints to those around me. Please forgive me, and remind me each day to empty the “pitcher” of my heart in the right place – into your loving hands.
