Feed My Lambs

After breakfast Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs.” Jesus told him. Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said. Once more he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.” (John 21:15-17)

Was Peter not listening? Was his attention elsewhere? Perhaps he was just tired. He had been working all night; he had just had a big breakfast and he may have been nodding off. But Jesus patiently persisted. “Do you love me?”

When I read this scripture I wondered…do I listen? What distractions do I allow to separate me from His voice? Do I work too hard or get involved in so many activities that I’m too tired to respond to Him?

And what does He call us to do? “Feed my lambs. Feed my sheep.” Out of hearts full of love for our Lord we minister to others. We care for those who need His touch. And we listen for His voice.

Is the Lord bringing to mind the names of any of His lambs that need a special touch today? Do what Jesus requested of Peter… feed them.

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for the people you put in my life over the years to “feed me”. Help me now to be sensitive to the needs that your lambs have, and to lovingly care for them, helping them find the spiritual food that they need to grow.
