Learning Contentment

"I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength." (Philippians 4:11-13)

We spent many years playing baseball, actively going back and forth between the minors and the majors. I do know what it is to have much, and I have experienced what it is to have less. Through this I’ve learned to be content no matter what circumstances we face. The source of my contentment is God Himself.

Every once in a while, I try to take control of things myself. I take my focus off Him and put my eyes on our circumstances, but those times are becoming less and less.

In the midst of the various situations have faced in baseball and those we will continue to face out of baseball, I’m learning to make the choice to pray instead of worry.

For many years my trust was in baseball to provide, but now my trust is in Him Alone. It is a process to learn contentment in ALL circumstances, and the process is slowly allowing me to change my attitude despite the fact that our circumstances change all the time. I will leave those decisions to Him.

I promise you that life will give you times of prosperity and times of adversity. Remember, in the midst of it all, God wants us to be content right where He has us.

May I encourage you to take your first step toward your journey to contentment? Choose to focus on God and what he did for you through His Son Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Lord, my head knows that your plans for me are perfect, yet my heart often doubts. Help me to choose to be content in you, and to truly trust you in every situation.
