Give Thanks to the God of Wonders

“Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, and for His wonders to the sons of men!” (Psalm 107:31)

Every year we have a special evening service at our church in order to share with one another our thanks and praises to God. This is always such a special time to hear about how faithful our Lord has been, working in the lives of His people. I have been deeply struck with the joy that we have in sharing with one another. There have been praises for everything from God’s daily provisions to friends, family, prayer partners, and jobs. There’ve been praises for God’s faithfulness through trials, surgeries, and illnesses. One couple who experienced great loss years ago when their infant died just before birth, shared their great joy and thankfulness as God blessed them with a beautiful baby boy.

I’ve come to realize that this tradition follows an ancient teaching given in Psalm 107:31-32: “Let them give thanks to the Lord for His loving kindness, and for His wonders to the sons of men! Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people and praise Him at the seat of the elders.” Many people have declared their thankfulness for the salvation that Jesus Christ granted to them through His death and resurrection.

Truly, when Jesus took on our sin and paid the penalty of death that we owed, He was expressing a deep, lovingkindness to us. Others have shared of God’s wondrous works of mercy, grace, healing, and provision. Everyone who shared these words of thanks and praise was definitely extolling the name of God and Jesus, lifting Him up and exalting Him.

So as we put out the Thanksgiving decorations, I encourage you to consider the words of Psalm 107 and let thanks and praise continually remain on your lips.

Let us extol our great and mighty God!

Prayer: Thank you, mighty God, for your love, your faithfulness and your gifts, which are so undeserved. More than anything, Father, I thank you for the salvation that you freely offer through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
