“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)
Life as the wife of a professional athlete provides abundant opportunity to see different areas of the country. In my travels, I particularly enjoyed the glorious view when driving through the mountains. Trees, wildlife, and rolling hills can promote relaxation and, somehow, fill me with a sense of peace.
At times, I would see a sign indicating a sharp curve in the road ahead. When unfamiliar with the area, I would slow down and drive more cautiously. Very often I discovered another spectacular view around the corner as I followed the bend in the road.
I find this to be a great illustration of baseball life. Everything is rolling along beautifully until someone throws me a curve. The satisfaction and contentment vanish as a new plan has to be put into place. Sometimes this comes in the form of a trade midway through the season or an injury that threatens to end a career in baseball. Perhaps a child becomes ill or an unexpected pregnancy occurs. My tendency is to figure it all out at the earliest possible moment!
When I am faced with a “sharp curve ahead” in my life, I have learned that the best action I can take is to slow down. Better yet, stop completely. The perspective I gain is amazing and I am then able to pray and seek the Lord’s guidance for the “new plan”. A sense of peace returns when I choose to trust God for the next step with a childlike faith. The view truly is spectacular when I allow my Heavenly Father to lead me around that “bend in the road”!
Prayer: Father, Just when I think I have things nice and straight and figured out just so, you remind me that you are the one in charge, not me. Thank you that when life seems to take an unexpected turn, it is really just the next step in the plan you have laid for my life since eternity past.
