"Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it." (1 Peter 3:8)
I can remember growing up and learning about the importance of brotherly love. You know, love your neighbor as yourself; the Golden rule that tells us to do unto others as you would want them to do to you. I never really thought this was too difficult when I had control of who my friends were and who I surrounded myself with. Well, I’ve had a conversation or two with God about this concerning baseball wives. “You can’t really expect me to love all 20 women you’ve placed me with this year!” I’d say to God. (I know how horrible that sounds! So let me remind you that I’m a work in progress, and since getting to know Him, God is continuing to transform my mind and heart!)
In the world of baseball we are thrown together with many women having very different personalities, backgrounds, opinions, hobbies, desires, etc. When I first entered this game, I would find a girl on the team that shared my same interests or thoughts, and I’d gravitate towards her and be content not meeting anyone else, thinking “I found my girl! HA….!” I was so wrong in doing that. I can now see how the Lord has brought us ALL together, not just 2 of us. He has let me know I don’t have to agree with all the different opinions, but I do HAVE to love them ALL, just like Christ loves us. We all have our faults, and as soon as we realize that and start accepting each individual as a special gift from God, you wouldn’t believe the unity he has in store for us.
I love what Paul wrote while he was in prison, in Ephesians 4:1-6:
Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all.
Wow, if we can’t get along in the comfy confines of a beautiful ballpark, what is wrong with us? Wonderful women of Christ, let’s try our best to be obedient to our Lord and love each other with the unfailing Agape Love the Lord shows us everyday! I now find it an absolute blessing to be able to get to know every woman the Lord brings into my life.
Prayer: Dear Father, thank you for these wonderful women whom you have made special, unique, and for a purpose. Please help me to acknowledge each one as a gift from you and treat them with the love and respect they deserve.
