While reading through the Bible recently, a passage from the book of Joshua spoke to me.
“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:8-9
It reminded me that the more I read and meditate on God’s Word, and the more time I spend with God, learning how to apply his Word to my life, the more joyful I become. Not only am I full of joy, but I am more at peace and prepared to take on whatever challenges may face me. I am strong and courageous because I know that God is with me wherever I go.
On the other hand, when I am not spending time in the Word, I become stressed and anxious. And in this fast-paced, uncertain life of baseball, it is very easy to become discouraged or even terrified!
The more we meditate on God’s Word, the easier it is to draw from scripture to find comfort and strength when we need it most. When we are having a rough day, we won't have to search for the verse we need to hear, it will simply pour out of our heart where it has been stored for just that purpose. We will also be able to encourage others in the same way.
As this new season begins, let's think about practical ways we can store more scripture in our hearts and minds. It can be as easy as writing a verse on a sticky note and putting it on your bathroom mirror or joining a local bible study wherever you are.
