Teach Us to Number Our Days

"Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." (Psalm 90:12)

What fills our day? Taking care of children, cleaning up, washing stuff, reading, cooking, cleaning, running errands, planning, hobbies, friends, work, talking on the phone...too many to list! We all are busy. We all have responsibilities and commitments - not to mention what we enjoy doing in our leisure time. At the end of some very busy days, it can still feel like nothing has been accomplished.

What makes us feel like we are behind, overwhelmed and unconstructive? A couple of possibilities come to mind. There are some women who always feel under pressure because of the way they use their time. They wait until the very last minute to get things done, and then have to work frantically to finish – causing themselves unnecessary stress. Then there are those who overestimate what they are able to accomplish and so take on too many responsibilities. Often they either feel so overwhelmed that they end up doing nothing or they begin to feel guilty and burn themselves out trying to do everything.

One way to avoid feeling burned out or stressed out comes from the Psalmist as he prays, “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Asking God to help us number our days - to put them in order with priorities - creates in us a desire to live each day the way He wants. It is all about Him, even in our day-to-day lives. He is to be the center.

If there’s a question about what we should to do, we need to seek God and depend on Him to teach us to order our day in such a way that we use it to the fullest, and also use it in a way that would bring Him glory and honor. It is a loving act to consult the ones you love before you do certain things - remember the One you consult created you.

If we number our days right by putting God first and allowing the rest of our activities to flow from Him, we will continue on in His will.

May God teach us to number our days and make us constructive and effective for HIM.

Prayer: Father, I love you and I want You to be the center of my day. Show me how to prioritize and then carry out what I need to do each day.
