”No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)
Nobody can claim immunity to temptation; it’s a universal experience. We all face it at some time in some way, whether we’re tempted to complain and grumble about the weather, the score, or the accommodations; tempted to speak impatiently or harshly to our children, the ushers, or the fans; or tempted to be selfish with our time, our money or our husbands.
At times the enticement to disobey God can be so subtle we hardly realize we’re sinning, and at others it can blatantly challenge us to knowingly disregard his commands. And all throughout, the thought that whispers through our minds is, “Go ahead. You’re only human. God knows you’re going to sin and he’ll forgive you afterwards.” How easily the scriptures are twisted to justify what our sinful nature really wants to do! According to Jeremiah 17:9, even our own heart tricks us: “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”
There is good news, though! Hebrews 2:17-18 lets us know that help is available from someone who truly understands what we’re going through. About Jesus, it says, “That’s why he had to enter into every detail of human life. Then, when he came before God as high priest to get rid of the people’s sins, he would have already experienced it all himself – all the pain, all the testing – and would be able to help where help was needed.” (The Message)
Wow! Isn’t it comforting to know that Jesus, God Himself in the flesh, has experienced temptation and knows just how to help us when we find ourselves in a tempting situation?!
1 Corinthians 10:13 is one of those cling – to verses in the Bible. This stuff is fantastic! No more excuses. No more easy give – ins. No more poor – me’s. Did you see what it says? My temptations aren’t any harder than anyone else’s. GOD is the faithful one! He will always fulfill his promises, and he won’t be late. He will never allow me to be tempted beyond what I can handle – in his strength. AND, with each temptation he will always give me an escape route so I can get out before I give in! Praise His name!
Prayer: Lord God, I realize that whether I emerge victorious or defeated from temptation depends on how I respond to it; help me to answer “NO” in your strength!
