You Make Me Brave

"For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you." (Isaiah 41:13)

I wish I could count how many times God has taught me lessons while driving. Minor League life has me on the road frequently, and it takes being stuck in the car on long road trips to force me to be still enough to listen. Most recently, the song You Make Me Brave by Bethel Music came on during my drive, and something clicked.

I have been living with a lot of fear the past year. I am a planner at heart, so I fear the future of our baseball career. I fear the unknowns and the end of his career since baseball is all we've known since high school. Infertility has always been one of my biggest fears, and we have been facing that for over a year. I have unknowingly let fear take hold of my heart.

But if the promises in the Bible are true, which we know they are, I have to let go of my fear and realize that fear is not something that comes from the Lord. There are countless examples of scripture that command us not to fear.

Fear of the Future: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

Fear of Infertility: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Fear of Inadequacy: For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7

If we let fear rule in our hearts, it hinders us from being able to stand firm on the promises of the Lord. "Brave" has never been an adjective I would use to describe myself. But, I am brave enough to face my fears and not allow them to control my thoughts because the Lord makes me brave. He gives me the strength to face those fears by surrendering them to Him.

What are the fears that you struggle with? What does surrendering those fears look like for you personally?
