Loosen Your Grip

“Let go of your concerns! Then you will know that I am God. I rule the nations. I rule the earth.” (Psalm 46:10)

Soon after we were married, I graduated college and was ready to start the adventure of traveling with my new baseball-playing husband. Then he blew out his elbow, had Tommy John surgery, and I found myself sitting in an apartment in Tucson, Arizona with nothing to do. I spent weeks sending out resumes, trying to find a job in my profession while he rehabbed and worked his way back to the playing field.

One day I was so bored that I drove to the craft store, bought a “Teach Yourself to Knit” book, gathered all the necessary supplies, and drove home to try it out. I always started out well enough, looping and pulling and stitching…but inevitably I would cling too tightly to the needles and pull too hard. The harder I tried, the tighter I pulled, the worse it became until I threw it all down in a pile of frustration.

I think about this whenever I find myself holding on too tightly to the reigns of my life. When I try to control everything and take things into my own hands, my heart becomes taut with anxiety just like that yarn did. When I cling to an “I can do this” attitude instead of releasing it all to Jesus, I end up in a fit on the floor, just like my failed knitting project.

The next time you pray, try this - instead of clenching your hands tightly, open them with your palms facing up. Show God that you are giving Him your worries, your cares, your whole life. Loosen your grip. Give it to the One who knit you together. Put your life in His capable hands.

Prayer: God, thank You for the reminder that You've got this. May we release ourselves fully to Your love and care, as we learn to trust in You.
