Firm Foundation

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27)

Have you ever had to fill out one of those forms that makes you list ALL of your previous addresses? After 15 years in professional baseball, we have a file with pages and pages of addresses from all over the country. Thankfully, my husband is the organized type and keeps these things in order. If it was up to me, I would never be able to remember any of it.

Over the years, we have lived in some nice, and some not-so-nice places. One time, we drove all day and night to reach our new city, and the apartment manager had left the key out for us because he knew we wouldn't be getting in until around midnight. We walked into our newly "cleaned" apartment to find dirty blinds, moldy carpet, and a horrendous smell. We didn't unpack anything except for our pillows and two sleeping bags. The next morning, they moved us into a temporary apartment that, while clean, smelled like old cheese. Yuck!

I was reading in Matthew the other day and came across the story of The Two Foundations. Jesus is teaching a parable about the importance of putting his words into practice, building a firm foundation for when the storms of life come. Often when we hear this story, we picture an actual house, built either on shifting sands or a solid rock. Over the years, I have pictured many different types of dwellings depending on where we were living at the time. But the message remains the same.

What is my foundation? What does everything in my life depend on? How solid is my relationship with Jesus?

Whether I am in a fancy big-league hotel or a stinky apartment, my heart, my life, my hope should be built on nothing less than Jesus himself. Anything else is shifting sand.

Prayer: No matter where I go, no matter how many addresses I have to put on my list, my foundation remains in you, Jesus. Thank you for anchoring my life.
