Venturing Out in Faith

When the disciples saw [Jesus] walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. (Matthew 14:25-29)

The first thing that a Christian must determine before he embarks on a ministry is to insure that it is Jesus who is calling him to undertake the task. Many good men and women have begun ministries only to realize halfway into it that it was a spur of the moment decision based on emotion, some other man’s persuasion or one’s own ambition. “Lord if it’s you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water.” He understood that before he dare step out of the safety of the boat, it was imperative that it was Jesus calling him.

Peter didn’t know how to walk on water, but he would only be responsible to do what he could. He knew how to walk and he knew how to step out of boats. He had been doing it all his life. Peter would do what he could and trust God to do what only God could do. So Peter in faith stepped out of the boat and walked.

Question: Before you set out to do something in the name of the Lord, do you meet with Him first?

Challenge: Do what you can, and know how to do, and trust God to do the rest.

Prayer: Lord may we be people who are led by your Holy Spirit doing what we can with the resources we have and trusting you do the rest.
