No Perfect Place

"Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever." (Psalm 107:1)

For the last few baseball seasons, our family of four has lived in what some people might describe as a small, ugly apartment. And by some people, I mean me. The first season I actually sank to my knees and cried as I realized we would be living there for the next 5 months.

But 2 years ago, in that cramped apartment with the ugly brown carpet, both of our kids gave their hearts to Jesus.

A few weeks later, we raced to the ocean on a rare off day to baptize them. I had imagined taking their hands and leading them out into the still waters of a cove...or something like that. But we ended up in Dana Point where the waves are fierce and the sand isn't sand at all, but giant rocks that batter and bruise your feet.

Full immersion wasn't optional, those waves crushed us.

It wasn't how I imagined any of it. But it was a great reminder that there is no perfect time to give your heart to Jesus. There is no perfect place to declare your devotion to him. He wants you now. Here. Wherever you are. Battered and bruised. So far from perfect you can hardly stand it.

Chances are good that we will be back in that small apartment next season. But this time, when I sink my knees into the ugly brown carpet, I will be crying tears of thanksgiving. Our kids follow Jesus!

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for seeking us with your never-ending mercy and love.

Suggested Reading: Luke 19:10
