Who is Moses?

“And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.” (Deuteronomy 34:10–12)

Moses was God’s chosen instrument and appointed leader. This is the same Moses to whom God appeared to in the burning bush (Exodus 3:1-6) and who God sent to Pharaoh to demand the freedom of His people (Exodus 5:1). He is the one through whom God performed miracles, announced the plagues on Egypt (Exodus 7-12:22), and the one who led Israel out of Egypt and through the Red Sea (Exodus 14). He is the one to whom God gave the Torah (Exodus 20-23:19). Moses met with God in the Tent of Meeting, and Exodus 33:11 tells us that God spoke to Moses as one speaks to his friend.

Unfortunately Moses was only able to accomplish part of God’s plan. Moses led Israel out of Egypt, but because of his own failure, he was not allowed to lead them into the Promised Land. “And the Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there” (Deuteronomy 34:4–5).

So Moses died in the land of Moab, and it was Joshua who lead Israel into the Promised Land (Joshua 1:1-2). The name Joshua is Yehoshua, or God/Yahweh saves, and it’s the same name as Jesus. Neither Moses nor the law can get you into the Promised Land. True deliverance and entrance to heaven can only come by God’s grace, by Yehoshua.

Question: Who are you following and on what are you relying for entrance into the Promised Land?

Challenge: Contemplate the question above: Read John 14:6.

Prayer: Jesus, guide me to your Father. May I be one with you.
