David the Warrior

“David replied to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.’” (1 Samuel 17:45)

Where did David’s strength and boldness come from? Not just boldness to face a giant, but to run after him and cut his head off? “Keep me safe, O God, for I have come to you for refuge” (Psalm 16:1). “As for God, His way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to Him for protection” (Psalm 18:30). “The Lord is my light and my salvation- so why should I be afraid? The Lord protects me from danger-so why should I tremble?” (Psalm 27:1). “The Lord is my strength, my shield from every danger. I trust in Him with all my heart” (Psalm 28:7).

David’s greatest warrior feats had nothing to do with his ability with a sling or a sword, but with a pen and a scroll. David’s strength came from the Lord. As a young shepherd boy he learned the art of prayer and the significance of spending countless hours talking to the Lord of Heaven and Earth.

As great a warrior as David was, he was still a flawed man who didn’t always rise up to the challenges that faced him. The true hero in the story is God, and our true warrior is Jesus. David eventually died and for that matter so did Jesus. But death wasn’t the end for Jesus, it was only the beginning! Jesus faced much greater giants than a 9 foot tall man named Goliath. Jesus faced, sin, Satan, the religious elite, temptation and pain that we couldn’t even possibly fathom, and Jesus did all this to set us free!

Question: Where does your strength come from; you talents; your finances; From your status or the Lord?

Challenge: If you desire to be a warrior after the heart of the King then memorize what David penned and put those truths into practice.

Prayer: Jesus you are the greatest warrior to ever walk the face of the earth and I am overwhelmed with your passion towards me. Teach me to walk in Your strength and not my own feeble attempts of might.
