Pray Like This...

“Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” (Matthew 6:9-13)

This is a rich text. But the prayer that we recite can become rigid and stale. What if you were to communicate to your spouse in this way? Think about it. My wife, mother of my children, you are pretty. What would you like done? You keep such a clean house, the same upstairs as you do downstairs. Provide my meals for me today. Sorry about the clothes all over the floor. And I forgive you for giving away my recliner. Lead me into the bedroom and deliver my dry cleaning for me tomorrow.

Could you imagine saying the that day in and day out to your wife? We can’t preset the dial and expect to get closer to God. There needs to be Worship, intimacy and transparency. Lets take one phrase from this prayer and see how deep we can press into our God.

“Hallowed be your name.” Hollowed means honored. Listen to the Psalmist:

“Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord from the sky! Praise him in the heavens! Praise him, all his angels! Praise him, all his heavenly assembly! Praise him, O sun and moon! Praise him, all you shiny stars! Praise him, O highest heaven, and you waters above the sky... you kings of the earth and all you nations, you princes and all you leaders on the earth, you young men and young women, you elderly, along with you children! Let them praise the name of the Lord for his name alone is exalted; his majesty extends over the earth and sky... (Psalm 148:1-4, 11-13).

Question: How deep can you go with the rest of this Prayer?

Challenge: Take some time to communicate the depth of each word. Look to Scripture for guidance. Look to your life for application.

Prayer: O Lord, teach us to pray.
