Your Treasure and Your Heart

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)

While Jesus had a lot to say about spiritual subjects and moral values, He was also very practical. In this verse Jesus is talking about money. Yes, money. Actually, Jesus had quite a lot to say about money and He often used money as a doorway to spiritual truth. In this short verse, Jesus is telling us that money is important. It has a strong influence – a powerful pull – on our hearts.

That is really true. If I make a significant financial investment in a company, I become interested in what the company does. I want that company (and my investment) to succeed and grow. If I buy a new car, I take special care of it. I drive carefully, take it to the car wash frequently, and I buy insurance so that if an accident happens, I am protected from financial loss. If I buy a new house, I want the yard to look nice and I make repairs when they are needed. I go to home repair stores and make home improvements. I want to be proud of my new house.

Jesus was right, where my treasure is, there my heart will be also.

Now that we see the truth, let us turn it around. Where would you like your heart to be?   Would you like to be drawn more to the spiritual things of God and His kingdom? Would you like to be more in love with Jesus and follow Him more heartily? Then, put significant money in the work of God's Kingdom and in the spread of the good news about Jesus. Give financial gifts to ministries that have helped you and others find Jesus and walk in His ways. Do as Jesus said in the previous verse “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” That money will draw your heart there too.

Question: How much of your money are you investing in God's Kingdom and His work?

Challenge: Pick a project or ministry that honors God and give a significant financial gift.

Prayer: Father, teach me how to use my treasure so I will love You more.
