“If anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.” (Matthew 10:42)

We often strive for rewards. A paycheck, professional recognition, the approval of those we love, and the roar of the crowd all motivate us to try hard to make our mark. Jesus seems to recognize this desire for reward, but in doing that He surprises us. We think rewards are handed out for extraordinary effort. The common, the unnoticed, the small things are seldom rewarded. To make our mark requires that we stand out in the crowd. But Jesus wants us to know that rewards are handed out by God, not by men. When our Heavenly Father watches our lives, He sees everything, even the things others do not notice.

One thing God looks at is motivation. In this short verse, Jesus points out that we can be motivated by dedication to Him. We can act because we are Jesus’ disciples. Jesus wants our discipleship to show itself in action and when it does, God rewards. Discipleship is not a spectator sport, it requires involvement.

God also looks for service. God rewards those who give, not those who climb to the top. Giving even to “little ones” pleases our Heavenly Father. In fact, what we give does not need to be flashy or superior. God does not compare our gifts to other’s gifts, even small gifts please Him. And when you stop to think about it, to the Creator of the universe, all of our gifts of service are actually pretty small.

The bottom line is this, God rewards discipleship in action and the service of giving.

And one more thing, God's rewards are never lost. Our Heavenly Father has a long memory. People forget, the crowd moves on, life changes, but God remembers, forever.

Question: Does my discipleship lead to action and service?

Challenge: Look around today. Who has God called you to serve?

Prayer: Father, take my eyes off the audience and fix my eyes on Jesus, the Lord who calls me to be His disciple.
