Give a Cup of Water!

“And if, as my representatives, you give even a cup of cold water to a little child, you will surely be rewarded.” (Matthew 10:42)

This verse is at the end of Matthew 10, when Jesus called His twelve disciples telling them to go minister and preach the “Kingdom of heaven is near.” At the end of His instruction to them he says: “Those who welcome you are welcoming me. And when they welcome me they are welcoming God who sent me” (Matthew 10:40). These instructions are also true for us today. We are to go and tell others about Jesus, be His representative, and let people know what He has done and that He is coming again. But, we need to show what Jesus has done by what we do for others. People need to not only know what Jesus said, but need to see that He makes a difference in how we treat others.

Our society seems to be more about hurting others than about helping them. If we know Jesus, He should make a difference in us. Jesus’ brother, James, said it this way: “But someone may well argue, ‘You say the way to God is by faith alone, plus nothing; well, I say that good works are important too, for without good works you can’t prove whether you have faith or not; but anyone can see that I have faith by the way I act’” (James 2:18). Spend time thinking about how you can help others see Jesus by giving them “a cup of water.” We can all do something for Jesus, and because of what He has done for us, we should want to!

It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago planned that we should spend our lives in helping others (Ephesians 2:10).

Question: Who can you tell and show what Jesus has done for you? How you are serving Jesus today by helping someone?

Challenge: Take time today to think ways to serve Jesus by serving others.

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for all you have done for me. Help me to show you to others by how I serve them.
