Love Carefully

“Do not love the world or anything in the world…For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world.” (1 John 2:15-16)

This powerful warning from John, Jesus’ disciple, hits us hard. There are a lot of wonderful things in this world: God's gorgeous creation, jobs that bring fulfillment and satisfaction, a precious family, even this fantastic game of baseball that we share in common. How can it be wrong to love these wonderful, God given blessings?

But as I read these verses more carefully, I note that John’s warning is about selfishness and pride in my things, not about what God has given. To love God and His gifts is not to be feared, but to love what I crave, what I desire, and what I accomplish sends me into dangerous territory.

It begs the question, what do I love? Is my love in response to God and His gifts or is my love focused on what I want and what I can accomplish? John warns us that selfish love will not last. My accomplishments, my cravings and my aspirations end up in life’s trash. But when I go after what God has for me, now I am investing in eternity. “The man who does the will of God, lives forever” (1 John 2:17).

Question: What do I love most in life?

Challenge: Be sure to go after things that will last forever.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thanks for warning me to be careful about what I love. Guide me to love You most and put Your priorities ahead of mine.
