Go on Speaking

“And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, “Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent.” (Acts 18:9)

One of the ways our growth and maturity in Christ can be stunted is by remaining silent when we are called to speak God’s word. Sometimes we can justify ourselves in thinking that speaking the truth is another person’s job.

Perhaps we think speaking God’s word is only the pastor’s job, or the missionary’s job, or those who seem skilled and especially gifted in evangelization. Although it is true that some are more gifted than others in preaching or articulating truth, we are all called to testify and proclaim of the grace and mercy we have received in the Gospel (1 Peter 2:8-9).

So then, what can we do if we are weak in our speaking and declaring the Gospel of God? We may think the Apostles did not struggle in such a task, yet we read of Paul’s petition for prayer in his litter to the Colossians: “Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word,  to declare the mystery of Christ,  on account of which I am in prison—that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak” (Colossians 2:2-4).

The Apostle Paul asked for prayer because he needed God’s help.

The Lord assured Paul that He was with him (Acts 18:9-10), and therefore he should not be afraid. This is our greatest comfort, that God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is with us, empowering us to declare the mystery of Christ that is being revealed.

Question: Am I avoiding situations where I am called to speak the truth of the Gospel?

Challenge: Ask for a door to be opened that you may testify of the Gospel of grace.

Prayer: Thank you Father, Son and Holy Spirit that you are with me. I ask Holy Spirit that you fill me and empower me to proclaim the love of the Father by sending his only Son to die for us.
