Jesus Ain’t No Genie

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us.” (Ephesians 3:20)

We recently saw the updated movie Aladdin and our kids love the music. They are often asking if we can have the songs blasting through our house and one of their favorite songs is called Friend Like Me that is from the prospective of the genie trying to convince Aladdin that he ain’t never had a friend like him.

The original movie came out the same year that I surrendered control of my life to Jesus and I remember early in my spiritual journey almost treating Jesus like a genie. Much focus was on the first part of the verse listed above….about Jesus being able to do far more than I could think and I thought “I ain’t never had a friend like this.”

I know there are plenty of people that incorrectly believe that we just need to ask and Jesus will give us a prosperous life. I am glad that I have discovered time and time again that Jesus ain’t no genie, but He is a spectacular savior. His character is not to grant our wishes, but His leading changes our lives and shapes our character.

It is the second part of this verse that is key… “according to the power that works within us.” Right before this in Ephesians 3:14-19 the apostle Paul writes about the amazing dynamic of Jesus in us that “Christ may dwell in your hearts.”

For those of us that have surrendered to Him Jesus is alive in us and leading us and shaping us to resemble His love.

When we are following the lordship of Christ in our lives all that we ask or imagine isn’t about a list that we think will give us health and wealth. It is much more massive because the desire becomes to glorify Him.

Question: Do you treat Jesus like a genie or a savior?

Challenge: Seek today to ask not what you want to have, but what you want Him to shape in your life.

Prayer: Jesus thank you that when you work in me you will accomplish far more than I can imagine in my own heart and to redeem the world around me.
