Standing Firm in the Lord

“Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.” (Philippians 4:1)

The Apostle Paul wrote a letter loaded with affection to the Philippian church. He writes “For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:8). Paul’s love for the Philippians was genuine. And Paul not only sought a closer relationship with this group, but he longed to strengthen their relationship with Jesus “Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved” (Philippians 4:1).

We should ask ourselves: Do we have friends who seek to imitate Christ, as the Apostle Paul did? I know I would not be where I am with the Lord if there were not others who saw me as a brother, loved me, and sought to ensure that I would be firm in the Lord.

If we are new in the Christian faith, what type of friends are we looking for? Who will we allow to influence our lives most? Those who seek for us to stand firm in the Lord? Or those who just simply spend time with us out of convenience?

The Apostle Paul models for us what it is like to seek and follow Christ, and also to live and see Christ formed in others.

Our technology has us more connected than ever, but how deep are these connections? As we read through Paul’s letter to the Philippians, we recognize the depth of Christian fellowship modeled by the Philippian church, and the high calling Paul was laying out, that their lives would be worthy of the Gospel (Philippians 1:27).

Question: Am I seeking to have friends who love the Lord? Am I seeking to be a person who loves and stands firm in the Lord?

Challenge: Think of ways you can encourage others to stand firm in the Lord. Pray for them. Encourage them.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your Son. Help me to love him. Help me to be a friend that encourages others to know and love your Son.
