Why Worry?

“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” (Matthew 6:27)

What do you worry about? Your job stability? Playing time? Batting average or ERA? Your family? Health? It has been said that “worry is practical atheism.” In other words, if we truly believe in God as He is described in the Bible, there would be no need to worry because we would trust Him completely, regardless.

Corrie Ten Boom had an interesting perspective on worry. She grew up in a devoted Christian family. During World War II, the Ten Boom home became a refuge, a hiding place for those hunted by the Nazis, mostly Jews. Someone betrayed them, and though the Jews they were hiding were never found, the Ten Booms were arrested and sent to a concentration camp. In spite of their circumstances, they continued to live out their faith and, as a result, many came to Christ. Corrie was the only one to survive, and her family’s story, “The Hiding Place,” has been used by God to challenge many. The things they had to deal with were much more intense than what we face, but her TRUST in God led her to write, “Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow. It empties today of its strength.”

Jamaican Bob Marley, reggae music's ambassador to the world, popularized the song “Don’t Worry; Be Happy” with the lyrics “in every life we have some trouble, when you worry you make it double… don't worry, be happy.” As Marley learned just seven months prior to his death when he became a Christian and was baptized as a follower of Christ, the only true cure for worry is to TRUST God.

In the Gospels Jesus states: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” (Matthew 6:25-27).

Are you worrying about the things of this world, or do you trust God as your provider? “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).
