His Priceless Word

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

The Bible contains several testimonies about itself. We learn from God’s Word, for example, how the Bible was transmitted: “... man spoke from God as he was swept along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). The author of Hebrews teaches us that, as we study the Bible, the Bible studies us, “revealing the thoughts and attitudes of a man” (Hebrews 4:12); and we learn that God’s Word never fails to fulfill the appointed purpose for which it is sent forth (Isaiah 55:11). The entirety of Psalms Chapter 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, is dedicated to reflecting the all-sufficiency of God’s Word as well as the perfect character of its Author.

Today’s focal passage reveals perhaps the most essential purpose of the Scriptures: “... so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17).

It is important to note that the “good works” spoken of are NOT for the purpose of earning our salvation. That is impossible, for salvation is purely by grace, through faith in what Christ alone has accomplished for us (Ephesians 2:8-9). The good works referred to are the supernatural outflow of lives that have been transformed by the power of God’s Spirit that indwells Believers. Their value is that they are the means by which we fulfill the purpose for which we were created: to glorify the Lord! (Isaiah 43:7). When we live distinctive, selfless lives of love, peace, kindness, and compassion, God is revealed and made attractive to a world that desperately needs what He offers. By its instruction, the Bible is indispensable in helping shape us into those with the knowledge, wisdom and empowerment to be those effective ambassadors for Christ God calls us to be ... for His glory! (2Corinthians 5:20).

Question: Do you recognize the incalculable value of God’s Word?

Challenge: Study Romans Chapters 1-3 to learn of our desperate condition and God’s rescue.

Prayer: Lord, make the Bible my authority, my conscience, and my guide, that my life might be for your glory.
