Genuine Praise

“I will extol the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips. I will glory in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.” (Psalm 118:19)

In Ephesians 5:18-19, Paul declared that when the believer is “filled with the Spirit” genuine worship follows. In John 4:24, we are instructed to “worship in spirit” meaning that worship was not to be a mechanical ritual or a physical exercise such as showing up for church.

In order for our praise to be genuine:

We must approach God correctly, that is, through Jesus Christ who is truth. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Only believers can worship God in truth.

We must view God and ourselves honestly in true biblical perspective. “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth” (John17:17). We must acknowledge Him to be what He is (Holy, Perfect, Sovereign, etc.) and ourselves to be what we are (imperfect, sinful, etc.). “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord almighty…” (Isaiah 6:1-8).

We must praise Him in reverence and with understanding. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow His precepts have good understanding. To Him belongs eternal praise” (Psalm 111:10).

We must give wholehearted praise and service to God. We must not, as the hypocrites, go through the “right” religious motions for ulterior motives. “These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me” (Matthew 15:8-9).

We must obediently follow God by allowing His Word (truth) to govern every aspect of our life. “God is spirit, and His worshippers must worship Him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

Final Thought – If it’s not from the heart, regardless of the wording, it’s not true praise. Memorize Psalm 119:10. “I seek You with all my heart; do not let me stray from Your commands.”
