New Every Morning

“Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)

Happy New Year! It’s a greeting we’ve all heard and given many times this month. The fact that it’s “new” is something to be happy about, because it gives us a chance to set new goals and have new beginnings. It’s good that God divides time into years, but I’m glad he also gives us other time cycles that reset even sooner. We have new seasons every three months, new months every 30 days or so, and new weeks every seven days. But my favorite one is starting a new day every 24 hours.

God likes daybreaks too. As the verses from Lamentations above point out, the LORD’s compassions never fail; they are new every morning. David writes in Psalm 143:8, “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you.” And Moses prays in Psalm 90:14, “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”

Isn’t it wonderful to know that God’s love and compassion for us never run out, but are new every morning. Think of it: the King of all creation renews his compassion for us every day! That knowledge should refresh us spiritually and prepare us for what each new day holds. We just need to trust God for his presence and provision in our lives knowing that he will never leave us nor forsake us. God daily renews his commitment to us; may we likewise renew our commitment to him every morning. Happy New Day!

Challenge: Begin your day with prayer and time in the word of God and ask Him to give you the wisdom you need to rightly handle both the challenges and opportunities of the day.

Prayer: “This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).
