God Seeks Worshipers

“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.” (John 4:23)

Today’s verse tells us that God is seeking true worshipers, who worship the Father in spirit and truth. This is a stirring thought! It should stir in every true believer a response that says, “If God is seeking true worshipers, I want to be one!”

What is worship? A P. Gibbs, in his classic book entitled, Worship: The Christian’s Highest Occupation writes, “A great deal of confusion exists in Christendom as to just what constitutes worship. It is often confused with listening to a sermon, with service to the Lord on behalf of others; with testimony to Christ’s saving and satisfying grace; with the preaching of the gospel; with ministry of the Word…, and with prayer.” In fact, Jesus made a distinction between worship and service with this reply to Satan’s temptation: “…You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve” (Matthew 4:10).

What is the difference between worship, and service (ministry)? Gibbs gives a helpful definition of the two: “Ministry is that which comes down to us, from the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit, and through the human instrument whom God has gifted for this purpose. Worship is that which goes up, from the believer, by the Holy Spirit’s power, through the Son, to the Father, Thus ministry is that which descends from God to us; while worship is that which ascends from us to God.”

Worship is a magnificent subject, which can only be touched upon in a short devotion like this. May the thought that God is seeking worshippers stir our hearts to understand more fully what it means to worship the Father in spirit and truth!

Question: Do you hunger to be the worshiper God has called you to be?

Challenge: Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker”(Psalm 95:6).

Prayer: Lord, develop our capacity to worship you more fully!
