You Are A Living Letter

“You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” (2 Corinthians 3:2-3)

The Book of 2 Corinthians is largely Paul’s defense of his ministry to the Corinthian Church, a church he had established and in which he had a strong personal investment. In his absence, false teachers had infiltrated the body and attempted to undermine Paul’s authority. Among other deceptions, they apparently presented what likely were counterfeit letters of recommendation that impressed the people. In addressing this particular issue, Paul writes that, unlike the deceivers, it is not necessary that he provide written letters of recommendation to commend himself, or to prove his credibility as a minister. The proof, he says, is in the visible evidence of the transformed lives of the church to whom he writes!

In the same way, each of us are “living letters,” read each day by those in our spheres of encounter. The story our lives tell reflects the impact of many ministry influences. Ultimately, however, we are Christ’s work, the product of “the Spirit of the living God.”

Just as a farmer’s responsibility is to cultivate the soil, plant, and water so that God might bring the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6-7), so are pastors and teachers God’s instruments to help prepare and nourish the soil of our hearts so that God, by His Spirit, might effect our spiritual sanctification. The growth, and the glory, are always the Lord’s!

Question: Are you regularly exposing yourself to Biblically sound preaching and teaching, as well as engaging in personal inductive Bible study?

Challenge: Never forget that you are the only Bible letter many will ever read. Let your life be the story of God’s supernatural power.

Prayer: Lord, let your appeal to the world, made through me, be pure, holy, attractive, and compelling, for your glory!
