Forgiveness

“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12)

Here in the northland, in the depths of winter, temperatures can be very cold. Cars and home heaters need to be in good condition, not just for comfort but for safety. Engines need to be dependable and houses snug. Diligence and maintenance are essential for winter survival when temperatures outside are lower than your freezer.

In the model prayer for His disciples, Jesus addresses the essential subject of forgiveness. Forgiveness is a lot like a tune-up for your car or your furnace in the northland. It is essential for your spiritual life. Without forgiveness, bitterness, resentments, and guilt weigh us down. They can become so heavy that we cannot do the important work of loving and serving God and others.

Forgiveness can set me free from my own guilt. It takes the burden in my soul, cleans out the sludge in my heart and sets me living with new vitality. Guilt can ruin my life, but God's forgiveness changes everything. God how we need Your forgiveness.

I need to be a forgiver too (just like Jesus says in His model prayer). Forgiveness sets me free from the sins of others. Resentment, revenge, and retaliation all damage our spirits. Sometimes they even sap our strength and bring on physical symptoms like pain, anxiety and even depression. When we forgive, we release the burdens of other’s sins. God, help us to be good forgivers.

Question: Have I found freedom in God's forgiveness?

Challenge: Read all of Jesus’ model prayer in Matthew 6:9-15.

Prayer: Jesus, please forgive my sins against you as I forgive those who sin against me.
