He Lifted Them Up and Carried Them

“In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.” (Isaiah 63:9)

One of the most profound mysteries is how God is both so huge (eternal, all-knowing, all-powerful) and yet so personal and close. I remember talking with a player on our team who was going through a very difficult personal trial. He said, “Whenever you talk about God, you talk about him as though He were right here in the room, as if you knew him.”

What that player was describing is the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is God’s very real and personal presence living in us. All those in Christ have the Holy Spirit living in their lives. (1 Corinthians 3:16)

As I have been meditating on this verse from Isaiah, I am struck by three things. First, He saved them by his presence. In a very real way, having God be right here with us and knowing we aren’t alone or forgotten is what saves us. Second, He redeemed them by his love and mercy. God’s lovingkindness actually pays the price and buys us back. Third, He lifted them up and carried them. When we are too tired or broken to move, it’s as if God comes and picks us up and carries us. What a beautiful picture.

I don’t know where exactly in your life you need saving, redeeming or for God to pick you up and carry you, but I know that we all go through trials. May you hold tightly onto God, that His presence might save you and that He might pick you up and carry you as you rest in His arms.

Question: Where do you need God to lift you up and carry you right now?

Challenge: Ask God to help you see Him more clearly.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for saving, redeeming and carrying me. Help me to find security in your presence. Amen.
