You Go First

“The Lord is the One who will go before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)

Do you have childhood memories of you and friends facing scary situations? Maybe it was entering an abandoned house that was rumored to be haunted, or accepting the challenge to jump off a high cliff into a lake. Maybe it was crossing a field where a non-kid-friendly bull lived. Whatever you and your friends faced, I imagine a common phrase expressed was, “You go first!”

We all take solace in knowing someone goes before us into the unknown. We get security knowing someone else endured what we are facing and lived to talk about it. Their experience may bring hope for us and may even provide clues for a successful journey. Therefore, I frequently find myself clinging to today’s verse.

Moses spoke these words originally to the Israelites as they prepared to cross the Jordan into their promised land. Most of the older generation died over the last forty years. Israel would no longer have Moses to lead them but rather the younger, less experienced, Joshua. The new land would present its own challenges. Understandably, the Israelites were scared. As I read the story, I can easily imagine a collective, “You go first!” Moses gave comfort by declaring God would lead them.

We find similar encouragement for today in verses places like Hebrews 13:5 where it is written, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” No matter what we face, God is always out in front, leading the way and at the same time is walking beside us on our journey. Jesus even endured our most feared unknown, death itself. (I Corinthians 15:57). Therefore, there is no reason for fear or discouragement, rather, in each uncertainty, we can confidently proclaim, “I’ll go second.”

Question: Are you currently facing a situation that causes you to fear?

Challenge: Memorize Deuteronomy 31:8

Prayer: Father, help me live with the confidence that You are always going ahead of, and walking beside me.
