Everything

“In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.” (Luke 14:33)

Salvation is free, but discipleship costs everything you have. Let that sink in for a moment. Salvation happens freely and fully the moment you trust in the shed blood of Jesus to save you from your sins. At that moment you are justified and granted eternal life. We owed the debt, but Jesus paid the price. As it says in 2 Corinthians 5:21: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Having received so great a salvation it is natural and proper to want to follow Jesus, making him our Lord, and Jesus makes it clear that in that regard he wants our total devotion. In Luke 14:26-27 He tells those who were eager to follow him: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”

Of course, Jesus doesn’t mean you should actually hate your family. He’s using hyperbole to stress that nothing—not even family relationships—should prevent us from following and obeying Him. And “carrying a cross” means that we must be committed to following Him despite persecution, even martyrdom.

Devoted discipleship validates the testimony of our saving faith. As Jesus says in Luke 14:28-30: “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’”

Following Jesus is serious business.

Question: Are you willing to give up everything to follow Jesus?

Challenge: Consider things that may be keeping you from following Jesus 100% and prayerfully surrender them to Him.

Prayer: Lord, help me to be willing to give up everything to follow you.
