Gods Call

Then Gideon said to God, “If you will save Israel by my hand, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.” (Judges 6:36)

Israel had disobeyed God’s Word and has rejected His direction. Because of this, Israel had been put under constant attacks by their enemy the Midianites. An angel comes and visits Gideon telling him he was the one who God was going to use to save Israel from Midian. To verify this, Gideon asked God to do the simple task that we see in this verse. Once God did it, Gideon asked God to do another task. And God did what Gideon asked.

There are a couple of things for us to recognize here. First God calls whom He may call. Gideon was the “least in his father’s house in the weakest clan of Israel.” Has God called you to serve Him and you said “who am I that I might ___________ (preach, teach, give, lead a Bible Study, go visit a person in the hospital, etc.)? And you used some excuse to not serve. It's wrong to not answer the calling that comes to your heart when God is asking you to fill a role. He uses us. He can use you.

Second is, Gideon wanted to make sure it was God calling him. Sometimes we can mistake our own selfish desires, or choosing a good thing over the best thing, or see even Satan himself direct our decisions. John tells us in 1 John 4:1 “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

Question: What has God called you to?

Challenge: “He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thessalonians 2:14).

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your calling. Open our hearts to hear Your voice and to answer when You lead us to serve You. Amen.
