Images of Worship

“To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him?” (Isaiah 40:18)

A friend of mine is an amateur photographer. One afternoon she was taking photos of pictures of her grown children which were in glass frames and kept realizing that her reflection kept showing up in the pictures. Her face was reflecting off the glass and showing up in her pictures overlaying the pictures of her children. As a Believer she immediately recognized the significance. Her children would always have the reflection of her life and influence in their lives. She asked the question “What am I reflecting?”

The prophet Isaiah asks us the question “To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with Him?”  Scripture constantly reminds us of the danger of worshipping the creation instead of worshipping the Creator. Staying in Isaiah we read in Isaiah 42:17, “They are turned back and utterly put to shame, who trust in carved idols, who say to metal images, ‘You are our gods.’” And yet, we continue on, don’t we? We worship our achievements, we worship our leaders, we worship athletic or screen “stars,” we worship our wealth, or health, or money. God’s Word tells us that those who worship “carved idols” (this can be applied to any idols) will be put to shame.

What image or likeness can be compared to God? "With whom will you compare me or count me equal? To whom will you liken me that we may be compared? Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me” (Isaiah 46:5, 9).

What image does your life reflect? Is it one worthy of worship?

Question: In who or what do you worship?

Challenge: The challenge is always to evaluate your life. Be honest in the things that you place above your relationship to God. Worship Him and Him alone!

Prayer: Father You alone are worthy of worship and worthy of praise. I lift Your Name on high! Amen!
