Setting Boundaries

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But, his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:1-2)

The best time to determine ethical and moral decisions is not in the heat of the moment. It is difficult to think straight when emotions are running high. Peer-pressure and not wanting to be seen as weak or embarrassed has caused many to make decisions they later regret. The best way to avoid moral failures is to set boundaries in advance.

Don’t walk in the counsel of the ungodly. The word “walk” is a metaphor used in Scripture to illustrate how a person lives. The psalm exhorts us to live godly lives. Make a choice to avoid ungodly practices and ungodly people in your life. Allow only persons that speak sound and godly advice into your life. Set boundaries on your life-style.

Don’t stand in the path of the sinners. We are exhorted to avoid hanging out with shady characters and partaking of their practices. Like all paths that lead somewhere, rubbing shoulders with sinners will eventually lead to places you never intended to go. Make a choice to choose good friends. “Do not be misled, bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Set boundaries on who your friends will be.

Don’t sit in the seat of the scornful. What others perceive of you as a person will largely depend on both who you relate with and how you treat others. Choose to edify and be kind to those that are different. Be Christ like. Remember, “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). Set boundaries on how you will and will not treat others.

Question: What boundaries do you currently have in place in your life?

Challenge: “For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish” (Psalm 1:6)

Prayer: Lord gives us hunger and a delight for your Word. Amen.
