Going Deeper

“Now if I have indeed found favor in Your sight, please teach me Your ways, and I will know You and find favor in Your sight.” (Exodus 33:13)

In Genesis chapter 13, God told Moses His presence would not be continuing with the Israelites because they were a “stiff-necked” people and their sin jeopardized His continuing protection. This news was unbearable to Moses. He had already experienced that the Lord was good (Psalm 34:8), and Moses was not going to be satisfied with anything less. God had faithfully led His people out of bondage and Moses learned to depend on God’s leading, protection and presence.

A few years ago a popular brand of potato chip developed the slogan, “Betcha can’t eat just one.” The implication was once you try their chip, you will not be satisfied until you eat the entire bag. When you try the best, “some” will never be enough. This is where Moses found himself when it came to experiencing God. The expression, “found favor” means grace and carries the idea of a superior stooping down in kindness to an inferior (Strong). Moses had experienced God’s grace in the past. He asked God to take him deeper into that grace. He came to understand that gaining more grace somehow intertwined with gaining more understanding of God and His ways.

We often fail to see this. Many times we want God’s grace in the form of protection or provision during difficult times while overlooking God’s revelation of Himself through those same circumstances. Once we see the revelation as a form of grace, we may be able to see we are also receiving protection and provision. Then we are “hooked” like Moses. We learn that God is our only source of true satisfaction.

Question: Are you sometimes guilty of wanting the gift more than the giver?

Challenge: If you are in challenging circumstances now, make it a point to note when and how God reveals His ways to you. Keep a journal for recording your new insights.

Prayer: Today, use the focal verse as your prayer back to God.
