Amazing Grace

Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: “Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, Lord God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men.” (1 Chronicles 17:16-17)

The context of today’s focal passage is that David had become established as king over Israel and had built himself a royal palace in which to live. Sitting in the luxury of his palace he was convicted of the need to build a temple for God: “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent” (1 Chronicles 17:1b).

God was pleased by David’s desire to honor him but told him that his son—who was not yet even born--would be the one to build the temple. God gives an amazing blessing to David: “When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever” (1 Chronicles 17:11-12).

Today’s focal passage is David’s response to God’s amazing promise to establish his kingdom forever. One commentator said these two verses were the inspiration for John Newton’s famous hymn, Amazing Grace, noting that Newton, like David, “saw his own unworthiness and smallness exalted by God’s truly amazing grace.”

As you begin to sing that song in your mind consider especially this verse today: “The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, as long as life endures.”

Question: Are you trusting in God’s amazing grace to help you as you follow Him?

Challenge: Read 1 Chronicles 17

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your amazing grace that brought Christ as the ultimate fulfillment of your promise to David.
