Life is War

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:11-12)

God has made it clear that life is war. We wake up each day to a spiritual battle ground. If we want to thrive in life, than we need to approach life more like soldiers on a battle field then tourists on vacation. A soldier is not surprised by a fight, but prepared. A tourist is taken off guard and left floundering.

How do we live like soldiers? We realize our daily need for the armor of God. Each part of this armor corresponds directly to something about who Jesus is. Jesus is our belt of truth, who continues to be our guide, no matter how confusing life gets. Jesus is our breastplate of righteousness as His sinless life covers over our sinful lives when we put our faith in Him. Jesus is our shoes in the gospel that let us stand our ground in His finished work when things try to push us over in defeat. Jesus is the shield we can have faith in when Satan wants to come at us with his darts of doubt. Jesus is our helmet of salvation as we fix our mind on Him and the salvation He has won for us.

How we get through the warzone of life is through continuing to keep our eyes on Christ.

Question: Do you try to get through life’s challenges in your own strength, or by looking to Jesus with faith in His strength?

Challenge: Think of 3 things you can do on a daily basis to remind you about Jesus, your need for him and the armor that He provides for you.

Prayer: God, teach me to not be surprised and discouraged by the challenges of life, but to know the reality of the spiritual war that exists every day. Let this create in me a daily dependency on Jesus, that He might be glorified as I look to Him for His strength.
