Groans Too Deep for Words

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” (Romans 8:26)

In early October of last year, my wife and I received the phone call that every parent dreads. The nurse said, “Get to Phoenix today, your daughter’s health is failing quickly!” So we raced to the airport as fast as humanly possible and flew across country to Phoenix.

Many thoughts went through our mind on that flight. We did not know if Erika would be alive when we arrived. She had contracted a rare disease that attacked her spine and it began to shut down her body and she was now struggling to breathe. Thankfully, by the time we arrived she had rallied, but was still in critical condition. To date, she continues to make slow but steady progress in her recovery with the hope of one day being able to walk again.

Over these months, I have cried out to God continually and flooded my bed with tears on behalf of my daughter. I have literally run out of words to say! But during this time the Spirit of God has ministered to me in deeper ways than ever before.

Today’s verse reminds me that even though I had run out of words, He had not. For He knows my mind, my heart, my desires, Erika’s needs and God’s perfect will in this matter. He has taken my sighs, my grief and my tears and interceded for me perfectly before the throne of grace on behalf of Erika. What a comfort, what a blessing, what a God we have. He understands me so completely and knows the situation so thoroughly He does not need my inadequate words to help Him know how to respond. His perfect will be done in my daughter’s life for His glory!

Question: Do you ever feel your words are inadequate to express your heart’s desires to God?

Challenge: Take some minutes today to meditate on Romans 8:26-27 for comfort.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, who can grasp your goodness, wisdom, and power? Thank you for the amazing ministry of your Holy Spirit who always comforts, helps and intercedes on our behalf in accordance with your perfect will.
