Surviving Storms

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24-25)

It is a stormy time! Not just this novel coronavirus, but economic upheaval, job loss, and now racial and social unrest. Can I survive the storms raging around me? Jesus gives us simple, yet profound direction for living through storms.

First He says we need to hear His words. Regular, specific, thoughtful, input of Jesus’ words in my life is essential to survival in storms. Read the Bible, listen to uplifting music, and share scripture with brothers and sisters in the faith. Do I have frequent encounters with Jesus’ words?   If not, my survival is at risk.

Second, we must put His words into practice. Just do it! Jesus was not promoting a legalistic, law centered obedience like the religious leaders of His day. But there is no doubt that Jesus challenges us to do what He says. That starts today, right where I live. And as I do this daily, I develop a stronger foundation for the storms yet ahead.

Hear Jesus’ words and put them into practice. He promises that I can survive the storms.

Question: Am I paying close attention to Jesus’ words?

Challenge: Today, get serious and do something Jesus is telling you to do.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, thanks for giving me what I need to survive this tough time. Help me do what You say today.
