When Life is Hard

“Even though the fig trees are all destroyed, and there is neither blossom left nor fruit; though the olive crops all fail, and the fields lie barren; even if the flocks die in the fields and the cattle barns are empty, 18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will be happy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength; he will give me the speed of a deer and bring me safely over the mountains.” (Habakkuk 3:17-19)

What tumultuous times we live in, the past month has been amazing, and not in a good way. Peaceful protest as well as chaos is in our city streets. And, how you are doing with “social distancing,” and washing your hands a “hundred” times a day, and for many of us missing sports, especially the game we love—baseball. But how are we to respond in times like these.

Habakkuk was a prophet in Judah about 600 years before Jesus came to earth. The country was in great moral and spiritual decline. The economic outlook was bleak. They depended on agricultural to meet needs and when the trees were destroyed, fruit was not growing, the barns were empty, the economy was in trouble. But even more, the great country of Babylon was about to conquer them and destroy all they held dear.

How does Habakkuk responded?   First he says “I will rejoice in the Lord. We are commanded, “Always be full of joy in the Lord; I say it again, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). “Always be joyful” (1 Thessalonians 5:16).

How can we do this with so many problems around us? Habakkuk tells we can do this because God is my salvation” and “the Lord God is my strength.” Notice this verse, “God has come to save me! I will trust and not be afraid, for the Lord is my strength and song; he is my salvation” (Isaiah 12:2).

Question: Are you joyful in the midst of your problems? Do you trust the God of your salvation?

Challenge: Take time right now and ask the Lord to help you be joyful, take all you fears and concerns to Him. Let Him be your strength.

Prayer: Lord, no matter what is going on in my life right now, I know I can trust you. Calm my fears and help me to rejoice, full me with your joy.
