Our Defender

“Then he showed me Joshua…standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan!”... Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?” (Zechariah 3:1-2)

The name Satan means: "accuser, adversary, one who opposes." His purpose is to condemn, discourage, defeat, to bring shame to our lives. He loves to remind us of our past sins and failures to convince us we are not worthy to be a child of God.

In this scene described above he accuses Joshua before God. He presents evidence (v. 3) to show that Joshua was unclean, unworthy, unfit, and too sinful to be used by God. After all, doesn’t scripture tell us, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)? Therefore, this man is guilty!

However, God has not had a chance to respond. Proverbs 18:17 states, “The first to present his case seems right till another comes forward to examine him.” Thus, the Lord’s rebuttal to the prosecution is this, “I object! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?” I have chosen this one, I have snatched him by my hand. Who are you to accuse my chosen one? This is called mercy!

The thought of God rejecting his chosen ones is impossible. Romans 8:33 asks, “Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen?” The answer is no one! God himself has taken away our sin. He has clothed us in his holiness. He has crowned us with his righteousness (see Zechariah 3:4-5). This is called grace.

The enemy is ever accusing, but God is ever defending. When we are bombarded with his attempt to bring guilt, shame, defeat and reminders of past failures, here is our reply. “… For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night has been hurled down. They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony...” (Revelation 12:10-11).

Question: Do you ever feel unworthy, unclean, discouraged or shame from past failures?

Challenge: Read Zechariah 3:1-9. What does God have to say about your condition?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I am a child of God because of what the blood of the Lamb has accomplished for me. Thank you that I am cleansed, washed, redeemed, and forgiven!
