Misplaced Delight?

“Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 34:4)

When I first read this I was a love struck teenager. I got so excited, because I thought, “This is it! Now I can finally get this girl to like me. All I have to do is make God my delight and He will give me my desire.” I wanted this girl and so I tried to use delighting in God to get her. But is trying to use God actually delighting in God? Nope. Trying to use someone to get something else devalues them. No one likes to be used. If I used my friend just to get a free meal, but didn’t really care about them as a person, wouldn’t that devalue them? I’d essentially be saying that I enjoy food more than I enjoy their friendship.

We can’t try to use God and think that we are delighting in God at the same time. The only way to truly delight in God is to want nothing from God other than Himself. But if I want nothing from God other than Himself, what then is the desire of my heart? He is! And this is how the promise of this verse gets fulfilled. When we delight in God, He becomes the desire of our hearts and He always promises to give us himself.

So no matter what you want in life, no matter what you think will make you happy, what you think will fulfill you, there is only one thing that can truly satisfy your deepest heart’s desire. God Himself. Therefore, there is no greater pursuit we could have in this life than learning more and more how to delight in God.

Question: Are there ways you can devalue God by trying to use Him?

Challenge: Read your Bible every morning and don’t get up until you have read something in it that makes you take delight in God.

Prayer: God, help us to delight in you. Help us to see you for the great treasure, the tremendous beauty, the surpassing worth of who you are. Make yourself the desire of our hearts. Give us joy in you, so that you would be honored by the deep delight we have in you.
