An Intentional Walk

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:1-2)

The scene here is a runner. He’s taking off everything that will hold him back. He’s listening to the roar of the crowd cheering him on. He’s running with everything he’s got. This is what the Christian life is meant to look like. Fleeing sin that holds us back. Listening to the cheers from heaven of those who have gone before us. Keeping his eyes on the prize and running as hard as he can to get it.

How often this is not how we think about our Christian life though. We don’t run. We drift. We don’t pursue growth. We just coast along and do what comes easy and natural. But progress in our walk with Christ won’t come without effort being put into it. Jesus wants us to run after the prize of a deeper relationship with Him.

We don’t run after Christ in order to achieve our salvation. No, we run looking to Him as the founder and perfector of our salvation. Jesus has already purchased our salvation through his death on the cross. What we are running after is not trying to be saved. What we are running after is trying to get closer in our relationship with him.

Question: On a daily basis, much time do you invest in your relationship with Jesus? Are there any sins that you are holding on to that are holding you back from Him?

Challenge: Think about one area in your Christian life where you think you could be running faster. Share that with a friend, or spouse, and ask them to hold you accountable for growth.

Prayer: Jesus, help me to believe that a relationship with you is a prize worth pursuing. Don’t let me settle for just coasting through life. Help me pursue continual growth as your follower. Not because I am trying to earn my salvation. But in response ot the gracious gift of salvation that you have accomplished for me.
