Strong in the Lord

“But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.” (2 Chronicles 15:7)

The words of today’s verse were first spoken to Asa when he was king of Judah in Jerusalem. Asa was the great-grandson of Solomon and an ancestor of Jesus Christ. By the time Asa became king the society around him had stopped following the Lord and had plunged instead into idol worship and sexual immorality. Asa wanted to lead the people back to worshiping God and God sent his prophet, Azariah, to Asa to encourage him with these words. Despite opposition and the immorality that was all around him, Asa obeyed, and God greatly blessed him.

God offers us the same encouragement today through his word. Despite the godlessness and immorality all around us we are to be strong in our faith and diligent in doing good. That’s what the apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:58: “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

In Ephesians 6:10 Paul also wrote: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” This tells us the source of our strength and the power behind our perseverance. It says to “be strong,” not in our own power, but “in the Lord.” Think about that. Who is the Lord? He is the maker of heaven and earth; the author of life; the ultimate and final authority; the one who “destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light” (2 Timothy 1:10).

We are to be strong in Him and “in his mighty power.” What mighty power? The same mighty power God exerted in raising Jesus from the dead. The adequacy of this power to equip and sustain us cannot possibly be in doubt. Therefore, stand firm in your faith and do good, “for your work will be rewarded.”

Question: Are you relying on God’s strength and power in your life?

Challenge: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

Prayer: Lord, make us strong in you and in your mighty power.
