The Crowds

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (Hebrews 12:1)

Here in my home town, our team, fortunate to be playing baseball at all, is playing before a very small crowd. Covid restrictions have turned the sometimes standing room only crowds into spaced apart groups practicing social distancing. But we are fortunate. In some places baseball is played with no crowd at all.

This unusual circumstance has forced players to make big adjustments. There is little interaction with fans. No autographs. Home town support is not communicated in crowd reaction, loud applause, or any of the usual crowd support. A cardboard person might look real, but we all know the difference. It is difficult to play at peak performance without that fan support. We draw energy from those around us, cheering us on.

There are some very real similarities in our Christian walk with Jesus. We draw energy, support, help and affirmation from those around us who cheer us on. Jesus never intended His followers to go it alone. We are a spiritual family led by a loving and gracious Heavenly Father.

We also have a crowd of believers from the past, cheering us on. We draw strength from their stories, preserved in the Bible. Their witness, courage, faithfulness and dedication teach us much about loving God with faithful service.

Question: Who cheers you on in your Christian walk?

Challenge: Choose a Bible hero and learn more about their faithfulness and courage.

Prayer: Father, thanks for giving me a spiritual family and the strength they provide.
