Look Up

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1)

I am on the board of directors for an outdoor ministry and blessed to have the president of the ministry as a guide in the field. Nevertheless, I am notorious for not being able to find my tree stands. My first time out solo with explicit instructions should have been an easy walk in. I was told that the trail would lead me to a bend and the stand was at the bend in a small cedar.

In the dark I found the entry, I found the trail, I found the bend but no stand. I walk around for 30 minutes certainly corrupting the area and alerting the deer to my presence. I called the guide and he told me to go back to the bend, find a tree and sit until light. So I did. At first light when the landscape was coming into view, I looked up from under a small cedar. My guide put me right where I needed to be.

We have been given a direct path to our Creator. Jesus is “the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6). Though many of us have agreed to walk this path, the conflict in this world, the uncertainties in our lives and the temptations that capture our hearts can make us feel alone and frustrated.

Our thoughts and even our lives tend to wander in these moments, and we can corrupt that which God created to be pure and Christ died to redeem. Getting into God’s Word can help reorient us. We are directed to “Set [our] minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:2). Engaging with God through his Word, in prayer and contemplation sets us on the right path. It is the way we look up, setting our minds on what is above.

Question: What distractions have caused you to walk right by where God asked you to go?

Challenge: Find a cedar and read Colossians today. Look up.

Prayer: Father, only you can set my feet on the right path. Holy Spirit, please be my Guide.
