Between Two Advents

"The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever." (Isaiah 40:8)

If 2020 has revealed anything, it is the fact that we are living in the in between. Between the first advent, when Jesus was born in a manger, wrapped in human flesh ... ... ... ... ... and the second advent when He will come again.

We are living in the tension, and oh the tension that surrounds us!

There is a spirit of confusion right now. "We don't know what to believe or who to trust. Everything and nothing is true. Trust only yourself!"

Friends, we are called to be people who worship in Spirit and Truth. Not Spirit and Social Media. Not Spirit and News Networks. Spirit and TRUTH!

But how can we know the truth? By practicing hearing and discerning the voice of God.

This is going to sound like a cheesy cliche, but how much time do you spend in your Bible compared to how much time you spend scrolling your phone? (Don't worry, I'm preaching to myself here too.) How much is God's word penetrating your heart compared with other voices in your echo chamber? How often do you sit in silence, allowing God the space to speak into your noisy life?

There is a battle going on for our attention.

As Christine Caine put it so well a few months ago, 2020 is a reminder that we are not in control, BUT we have the opportunity to emerge from this with our faith stronger than ever.

So let's make a plan.

- Get in the Word every day. Whether you have a dedicated quiet time in the morning, read before bed, or even have the audio bible playing in the background...let God's Word penetrate your day.

- Memorize scripture. This can sound overwhelming, but start by writing a verse on a notecard and putting it on your bathroom mirror. Read it every time you brush your teeth. Embed God's truth in your heart and mind so it becomes a part of you.

- Schedule margins into your day. Allow for pauses, quiet, or even just shutting off all the apps on your phone. (Moms of littles I know getting quiet time is hard, don't feel pressure to do this perfectly. Even hiding in the closet for 5 minutes can help!)

Whatever you do, my hope is that we embrace the tension of this in-between life with joy, patience, and faith because we know the end of the story...and it is GOOD.

Prayer: Jesus, this world feels so noisy and unstable sometimes. Let that bring us back to you, the One who holds everything together. The Way, The Truth, our entire Life. Please give us wisdom and discernment in all things as we patiently wait for your return.
